Get Creative! Implement Instagram into Instruction!
Think there’s no need for hashtags, filters, or “selfies” in your classroom? Well, think again! Instagram is one of the most popular social media channels being used by this generation of visual learners and communicators. Social media is a part of their everyday routine, so why not make it a part of their classroom routine as well?
Instagram is a photo and video sharing tool that offers educators innovative ways to motivate and engage students through a social media platform for collaboration, research, creativity, and discussion. So what does Instagram look like in a classroom setting?
Download the Instagram app on your phone or tablet and create a classroom account. Next, share your user name with your students, parents, colleagues, and administrator so they can begin following you. I recommend making your account private. This way you know at all times who can see your posts, and have control over who you accept to follow your classroom.
Now the fun begins! Teachers can utilize Instagram in all sorts of ways. Just like many teachers utilize “Tweet Chats” through Twitter, Instagram offers a way to connect with other professionals as well. For example, every Tuesday during the school year, a large number of teachers participate in Teacher Talk Tuesday. They take and upload photos of what’s going on during their school day and tag them with #teachertalktuesday. Others following the tag can then get new ideas and see what is going on in schools across the country on that particular day. This also helps teachers find more people to follow on Instagram, building their professional network.
Instagram is also a great tool to utilize with your students inside and outside of the classroom. Read the ideas below to jump-start your Instagram implementation with ideas and examples!
