As an elementary student, some of the best experiences I had in a classroom were the days when we played review games. Motivated by points, leaderboards, and badges, the classroom quickly became excited and ready to work to determine the content “genius”. Inspire your students through traditional instruction by gamifying it: the act of adjusting instruction to include game elements to increase engagement and student success! Gamification is one of the best ways to engage students in the learning process. It provides the students a goal to work towards, the ability to move at their own pace, and encourages participation. It’s personalized, effective, and fun!

Motivate Students

Students thrive off of rewards systems. Whether it’s finishing in first place, getting the most points, leveling up, or earning badges, it is an intrinsic motivation tool. Some students are even motivated by the competition itself. Gamification often gives students the extra push they need to put effort into learning and display positive attitudes towards the material.

Encourage Problem Solving

There is nothing worse than not being able to defeat a level. It only makes me want to try over and over again until I master it. In the meantime I am thinking of different ways to adjust and make myself better to achieve that goal. That’s what gamification can do for your students. They are essentially participating in trial and error. They continue to better themselves to perform at a higher level. They want to solve problems because they have to get to that next level. These skills can go far in their academic careers and even permeate other subjects that are not gamified.

Personalize Learning

Most popular education games can tailor themselves to the students’ needs. If the student masters a level, they can move on. If the students are unable to master a level they keep trying and learning until they can. Educational games are personalized to each individual student. Additionally, teachers are able to keep track of what each student struggles with and where they can help with some one-on-one instruction.

Increase Engagement

The competition was fun, being on the scoreboard was fun, and I didn’t even know I was learning. Whether it’s your 3rd grade students working on their typing skills or your 8th grade students problem solving, games are always an enjoyable and engaging time.
